Edinburgh’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ) was introduced on 31 May 2022, with a two year grace period. This means that enforcement will start from 1 June 2024.
The LEZ boundary can be found on the Council’s LEZ web pages and is shown below:
To drive a motor vehicle within the LEZ, the vehicle must meet the emissions standards. You can check whether a vehicle is compliant at this online vehicle checker tool.
The LEZ will apply 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras are being installed to enforce the LEZ. The registered keeper of any non-compliant vehicle entering or driving within the LEZ will be subject to a penalty charge notice, levying a penalty of £60, reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days. Subsequent breaches within 90 days will incur a penalty of double the previous charge, to a limit of £480 for cars and vans.
