Mark Batho writes:
This month’s Grange Association talk, on Tuesday 21 January, has the title of ‘Scottish Lighthouses’. Alison Morrison-Low, formerly Principal Curator for Science at National Museums Scotland will outline the story of the earliest Scottish lighthouses, the first lights put up by the Northern Lighthouse Board and many of those put up around Scotland’s coast by that remarkable single family of engineers, the Stevensons.
Those who have attended previous talks will know how good they are, and we look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible to this event and to the subsequent talks in the season.
As ever, the talk will take place at St Catherine’s Argyle Church, Grange Road, commencing at 7.30 pm. Doors open at 7.00 pm and tea, coffee and biscuits will be available from then. This event is free for members, and £5 for non-members. (For anyone who wishes to join the Association, it will be possible to do so at the event).”
POSTER: In order to reach as wide an audience as possible, if you are able to fix a poster on your gate/railings please get in touch with, Mark Batho (mark.batho@grangeassociation.org) and he will put you on his list and ensure that a laminated poster is put through your door before each event. That would be very helpful to us.
“A special plea. As many of you will know, we rely on the support of a couple of people to make the sound and visuals work at our talks. At the forthcoming talk, we may be a bit short on this help. So, if anyone feels able to contribute some expertise on the day (it is honestly not that complicated if you know anything about computers – which I don’t!) could you please get in touch with Mark Batho (address as above). This would be much appreciated and would help to lower stress levels on the day!”
NEXT DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: On Tuesday 18 February, again at 7.30pm, our next talk will be on Eric Liddell, whose fame was reinforced by the film ‘Chariots of Fire’. The speaker will be Grant Jarvie, who is Professor and Chair of Sport at the University of Edinburgh and Vice-Convener of the Iona Community Board of Trustees.
