Planning permission and Listed Building Consent (LBC) were granted for mobile phone aerials in the tower (steeple) of Marchmont St Giles in 2000 as 00/00731/FUL and 00/00731/LBC.  The church is at 3 Kilgraston Road EH9 2DW.  It is a B-listed building.

In the subsequent 25 years, technology has advanced and the telecom operators have sought to improve 2G, 3G and 4G coverage and more recently to provide 5G coverage.

In 2017, applications 17/05112/FUL and 17/05114/LBC were submitted, seeking to upgrade the aerials in the tower to support 5G mobile services. All of the aerials were to be inside the tower, with no change to the external appearance, other than a change of material for the louvres from timber to GRP.  These applications were granted in 2018.  However, in 2020 new applications 20/01018/FUL and 20/01015/LBC were submitted, revising the proposals, albeit still with no exterior changes to the building. These revised proposals were approved in April 2020.

In 2022, new proposals were submitted as 22/00479/FUL and 22/00477/LBC for eight antennae, this time to be mounted externally on the tower (“face-mounted and wrapped in vinyl to match stonework”).  These proposals were granted in March 2022.

However, the work to install these eight external antennae has not yet been carried out.  Planning permission survives for no more than three years if work has not started and so both the planning permission and LBC have now expired. There are now two new applications 25/05222/FUL and 25/05220/LBC which repeat the 2022 proposals and seek to renew the permissions.  The closing date for comments from the public on these repeat 2025 proposals is 14 November 2025.
