See below an update issued by our local MP, Ian Murray, on the 23rd of October.
Strathearn Road Delivery Office Closing Monday 27th October
Good evening,
I am writing to update you on the Strathearn Road Delivery Office.
Despite almost 2500 people signing my petition, strong opposition from local councillors and MSPs, and local community groups raising real concerns, the Strathearn Road Delivery Office will close this coming Monday 27 October. This is a week later than initially announced in order to give the staff the minimum notification period for the change.
I have reiterated in the strongest terms to Royal Mail my deep disappointment in this decision, my concerns about the impact it will have on older and less mobile residents, and the strength of community opposition to the move.
I attach below the most recent response which I received from Royal Mail, which attempts to justify the decision.
Regardless of the steps they are taking on redeliveries, I know that many older and less mobile residents have real worries about how they will manage if they miss a delivery and need to travel to the Edinburgh City Delivery Office to pick an item up.
My focus now is on supporting these residents to make use of the redelivery options mentioned in the above letter, so that they do not need to end up traveling to Murrayfield to pick up undelivered items.
And despite Royal Mail’s assurances over staff retention, I know that the local CWU branch has had concerns over the pace of the closure. Please do show your support for your postie if you see them. It will be a time of disruption and uncertainty for many of our hardworking local postal workers, so I’m sure your support will be appreciated.
Thank you very much again for your support for the campaign. The support it has received from the community has been astounding. It’s deeply disappointing it has not resulted in the desired outcome this time around.
If there are any further updates to share, I will be in touch.
Kind regards,
Ian Murray
