Please see below a recent update from Grange and Prestonfield Community Council regarding the Strategic Parking Review which affects parts of the Grange.

Parking Zone B1 Proposals: Public Drop-In Session on 19 June
We’re advised that leaflets have been delivered to all properties within the boundary of the proposed Controlled Parking Zone S8 (currently the Priority Parking Area B1). Here is a fresh link to the Council Transport Team website https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/parkingreview which has been updated to reflect some live consultations and FAQs.
A public drop-in session is now offered on Thursday 19 June, from 13.30 to 18.00, at Reid Memorial Church Hall, on West Savile Terrace, EH9 3HY. Members of the Transport Team will be there to discuss the proposals. They will help you complete templates of objection or support, to be taken as consultation responses as you wish.
Please consider what is proposed for your immediate area. Visit the drop-in session. There is no ‘blanket solution’ for the whole area. Some residents will support the proposals; others will be very much against them. The retail and service outlets at the bottom of Blackford Avenue may feel new pressures. Do respond to the consultation. You are asked to let the Council know how you feel. Take up the invitation.

In addition, please note that full details of the parking proposals are given in the Edinburgh City Council Consultation Documents (TRO/24/12) linked below.

Here you can see a detailed map of the proposals, view the consultation documents and respond to the consultation.

This is another try by the CEC. The previous one was in 2023 and the response was very clear – 97% comments mentioned ‘no parking pressure’ at the consultation and only 26% mentioned ‘need for parking control’ (either existing or new). It is all documented and on the CEC website (thanks to GA the links can be found in this forum as well). The Labour councillors (supported by SNP and Greens) arrogantly decided to go to the next stage consultation regardless, however it was shelved until after the Council and General elections. Basically, the answer is already there and further spending on this is an undemocratic waste of time and public funds.

The nearest S1 CPZ is overdone as several streets (Dick Place etc.) have many dozens unused (and unpaid for) resident parking places. That means that those streets are kept ‘controlled’ for the privileged few who do not even have to pay for it. Some parking demand overflows to the other areas as the result. When we had our street without any markings, all street free to park on, for 2 months, it was the best time ever for everyone. If there is any parking pressure in the area, it is all artificial, as there are more spaces than cars.

According to the Council website, the drop-in session for the B1 Priority Parking Area (TRO/24/12) in Reid Memorial Church Hall will be held from 1.30pm to 4pm on Thursday 19 June 2025, NOT till 6 p.m.

And having been to the drop-in session, the Grange Assoc notice was right and the Council website is wrong:  the guy I spoke to was expecting the session to end at 6 p.m.!!

There is a lot of concern about parking for Blackford Avenue Stores and the Post Office.  The council official I spoke to yesterday thought that it would be possible to leave the parking as it is now, as it is currently ‘controlled’.  The committee will not be discussing it until the end of this year – they have to read and collate all our comments before then. The more comments they receive the better.

Last time there was a parking consultation they listened to our comments about the Blackford Avenue Stores parking and changed their proposal to the current situation.  On the bus stop outside there is a summary of reasons why we need to keep some short term free parking there.  If you feel strongly about this please use some of the in comments to the Council.

Map 7 in the detailed file of B1 maps also shows the conversion to paid parking of the currently free time-limited parking spaces in Mayfield Road outside the three shops closest to the railway bridge, which may push parking further south to the section between West Savile Terrace and Macdowall Road, which is already busy with people stopping briefly to visit Margiotta’s, Baby Ballet and the hairdressers.

I visited the Drop-In session at Reid Memorial Church on the 19 June 2025 with my husband to discuss the proposed Controlled Parking Zone(CPZ). We were advised by a member of the Councils Transport Team that one of the reason for the CPZ proposal was because currently there are insufficient resident parking spaces for current requests for parking permit allocation in the area.

In my submission to object to the proposed CPZ,  I suggested they consider the following outlined below, as certainly in West Relugas Road those who have allocated resident permit parking spaces are generally not affected by unwanted long term parking outside their properties:

                  1. Could the Priority Parking Area (PPA) TRO/24/12 be extended with more residential parking spaces to match the proposed CPZ residential parking spaces already drawn up while keeping the same time slot between 10 and 11:30 am?  This would further deter unwanted commuter parking and/or long term abandonment of vehicles parking in our residential area.

                  2. I would also propose that the existing Priority Parking Area (10- 11.30 am) is introduced to neighbouring street such as St Thomas Road and the upper parts of South Oswald Road which are currently unrestricted, as this would certainly deter the parking of vehicles and camper vans etc parking in these streets by many others vehicle from outwith this residential area.

                  3. The current PPA (10-11.30am) effectively prevents unwanted long term parking in the allocated residential permit bays without preventing a period of short term parking outwith the restricted period to allow car parking for those visiting residents or retail facilities in the area.

I wonder if others in the Grange area would consider this is be an effective compromise and a cheaper alternative than the proposed Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm restrictions proposed.
