The amount and height of weeds on the streets of our area is incredible. I understand that the cash-strapped council has probably stopped removing them, but maybe that’s OK if they can do something else with the savings.

Should we all start removing our own and putting them in brown bins?

I know many of us already do this.

I don’t mean a big squad like the leaf-clearers – that is different.

One issue is that some houseowners probably don’t see the need as it is “out of sight, out of mind”.

It will certainly hinder drainage in the gutter and block sivers when the weather changes and the leaves come down.

      Thoughts welcome !

Hello, encouraged by the message asking members to contribute to the Forum I am sticking my head above water again to join in this one. I am wondering (and hoping) that there is another reason as well as money why the weeds are being left. I think the council is trying to reduce the amount of pesticides it uses, and stop using the most toxic (to humans and pollinators) altogether. I totally support this initiative and the vote for councillors who try to hurry it along. It may be that a balance is trying to be struck here by managing weeds differently. I don’t know.

Strongly support the original post – we should all have a little civic responsibility and weed our own front walls, pavements etc. Helping neighbours who might be unable to do this would strengthen the community spirit. The Council have clearly abdicated their responsiblity for maintaing the appearance of our once beautiful capital city.

              BEGINS

Hi, Trying to create an account to comment on the forum. Questions have been raised regarding weeds on streets. There is a section on the Edinburgh City Council site which says (see below)

              Weed control
              Street weeds
From 2024 our Parks and Greenspace service will cease the use of any glyphosate-based chemicals in its maintenance of the majority of our maintained grounds. There will be no treatment of weeds by chemical across the whole estate including schools and housing areas. Additional sweeping machines will be used to remove debris and reduce potential weed growth. The Waste team now manage the weed maintenance in the city and they can be contacted on

              waste@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Trouble is that it’s worst where vehicles are left for long periods .. and a machine wouldn’t get into the gutter.
