› Forums › The Grange Newsroom › Wood and Coal Burning in the Grange – Important Info from the Council
Hi everyone,
Sometimes when walking around the Grange, I notice strong, pungent smoke smells, so just a quick heads-up: Edinburgh is a Smoke Control Area, which means it’s illegal to burn standard wood or coal in open fires.
Burning untreated wood or house coal in a standard fireplace, open fire, or non-approved stove is not just illegal—it also releases harmful particulates into the air, which are bad for everyone’s lungs, especially children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions like asthma.
You’re only allowed to burn authorised smokeless fuels or use a certified exempt stove.

Thanks all!
